On 25 May 1874, Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem premiered at the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta in Venice - with a symphony orchestra, four vocal soloists, and an eight-part double choir, a total of 200 performers. The date was chosen with care: it was the anniversary of Verdi's friend and national hero Alessandro Manzoni's death.

The work is based on texts from the Catholic Mass for the Dead, but is clearly marked by the drama of opera. At the time, it sparked debate about whether the powerful vocal parts belonged in a church setting - today, Requiem is performed almost exclusively in concert halls and is one of the most frequently performed large choral works of all time.

Randers Library's music educator Mik Stegger introduces the work in a way that requires no prior knowledge - only curiosity about classical music and opera. The event takes place in the Culture House hall, and coffee is served.
