"Everyone knows, of course, that an unmarried man with a good fortune must be in want of a wife." So opens Jane Austen's romantic comedy classic Pride and Prejudice - not without a sharp edge. For the consequence is that a young girl without money must desperately find herself a husband. We are in 19th-century England, where necessity and love rarely point in the same direction.
The Bennet family is the centre of the story: Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and their three daughters Jane, Elizabeth and Lydia. Mrs. Bennet's only goal is to get the girls married, for if she fails, they all risk ending up in poverty when their father dies. The clever, witty and sharp-tongued Elizabeth, however, will not settle for a sensible match - she believes in true love. This makes her meeting with the rich and arrogant Mr. Darcy difficult, for both are equally proud and stubborn, and yet they are slowly drawn into a game of emotions.
The 1813 novel is considered Jane Austen's masterpiece and has been among the most read works in English literature for over 200 years. It has been filmed several times and adapted into television series. The dramatisation for this production was written by Dicte C. Houmøller, who has previously dramatised Lady Chatterley's Lover and Upon the Road, and written the monologue Out There - all at Aarhus Teater.
In the role of Elizabeth is Aarhus Teater's Laura Kjær Jensen, known from among others Kirsten's Revenge and last season's sold-out Tristan & Isolde. Mr. Darcy is played by Emil Busk Jensen, known from among others Faith, Hope & Love and Phaedra at Aarhus Teater. Mette Døssing plays Mrs. Bennet, and Henrik Birch guest plays Mr. Bennet. Carolin Oredsson directs, David Gehrt is responsible for set design and costumes, and the choreography is by Esther Lee Wilkinson.
The performance is on Thursday 10 September 2026 at 19:30 at Aarhus Teater, Skolegade 4, 8000 Aarhus C. Ticket price for VærdiPlus customers: 180 kr. (regular price 280 kr.) - max. 4 tickets per person.
