Jamal Gerald: You See

Artist Jamal Gerald sits in a small pavilion on the square at DOKK1, waiting for you - one at a time. YOU SEE is an intimate one-to-one performance exploring the concept of privilege and the conversations it sparks.

When you enter, you receive some questions and draw a conversation card. There are six cards in total, each touching on a theme: race, gender, class, sexual orientation, ability, or religion. Jamal Gerald wants to create a space where it is possible to talk openly about sensitive topics - and he hopes such conversations continue long after the session ends.

Jamal Gerald is an artist and author from Leeds. He is queer and Black with roots in Montserrat and a family background encompassing both Catholic and ritual religious traditions. His practice centres on identity, conversation, and the ways people position themselves and each other in the world.
