Reading Through Europe

In 2025, Christine Fur Fischer, a literature graduate and literary communicator, traveled through Europe with her family - five people in one camper van - carrying books from the 17 countries they visited. In this lecture at Fredensborg Library, she takes us back on the journey and shows what happens when you don't just visit a country, but read your way into it.

Christine Fur Fischer unfolds literature's role as a gateway to a country's history, everyday life, and mental landscape. She presents the specific books she chose along the way and explains why those particular ones - books that opened doors to historical traumas, temperaments, conflicts, and everyday life rarely visible to an outsider.

The lecture also explores what literature revealed about the countries' self-understanding, and how a single work can change the way you experience a place. The story is conveyed through books, images, and reflections.
