European Bat Night, 29 August 2026, 17:00-02:00 at Nyruphus in Espergærde

European Bat Night takes place at Naturcenter Nyruphus in Espergærde from 17:00 to 02:00. The programme may change during the event.

17:00 Welcome and practical information.

17:15-18:00 Introduction to bats and the story of the bat "Little Guy" by Alison Averill, Roskilde University Centre.

18:00-20:00 - Outdoor trail (all): Guided tour focusing on good bat trees - what characterizes them, how old and tall they are, how bats use them, and what happens when they are felled. There are also stuffed bats and bat boxes to see. Practical outdoor clothing is recommended.

18:00-20:00 - Indoor lectures (especially for adults, approx. 30 min. each):
- Animal use of sound (Jeppe H Rasmussen, University of Copenhagen)
- Bat behaviour under light and noise pollution (Michael B Pedersen, Aarhus University)
- Listening equipment and bat recording on arter.dk and similar (Carsten Juel)
- Danish vs. English bat legislation (Alison Averill)

20:30 and 22:30 - Light trapping (all): Introduction to insect light trapping by Kasper Nyberg. What makes up the bat's nightly menu?

Approx. 21:00, 22:00, 23:00, 24:00 and 01:00 - Bat spotting (all): Overview of the bats we might see and hear, followed by walks with listening equipment led by Carsten Juel and Alison Averill.

01:45-02:00 Closing: which bats did we hear? Goodnight and thank you for this evening.
