Philosophical Film Salon #16: Chris Marker

Philosophical Film Salon #16 presents Chris Marker's Sans Soleil (1983), a landmark work in documentary cinema that unfolds as a stream of experiences, memories, and sensory impressions - together forming a multifaceted life.

The film travels the world through brief sequences from Japan, France, Iceland, Cape Verde, and Guinea-Bissau. A female narrator reads from travel letters written by an unknown man named Sandor Krasna. Glimpses of objects, buildings, people, and nature appear disconnected at first glance, but all point back to the camera and the person who captured them - together forming an experience of a reality that belongs to no one, but flows past like a collective memory.

After the screening, philosopher Luka Rudež gives a short presentation drawing on Henri Bergson's philosophy of memory and remembrance as the building blocks of reality. The presentation sets the stage for a shared discussion about the meaning-making power of memories in human life, and how the past alternately emerges and disappears in our experience of the world.

Luka Rudež (MA in the history of ideas) works with humanity's relationship to the sub- and superhuman - particularly the vegetative and the celestial - and their effects in the political sphere, focusing on a synthesis of medieval and 20th-century philosophy.
