The Mystery of Consciousness

Consciousness is the foundation for our ability to experience the world, think, and know that we exist - yet it remains one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in both neuroscience and philosophy. What is consciousness? How does it arise? And how can biological tissue give rise to the sense of a self?

Psychologist and neuroscience lecturer Kristian Sandberg from Aarhus University and philosophy PhD Morten Grønborg approach these questions from their respective perspectives. They examine what modern brain research can actually tell us about consciousness, and how philosophy challenges our understanding of mind, self, and reality - including the boundary between the measurable and the experienced, and why consciousness remains a mystery even now, when we can map the brain in unprecedented detail.
