The Climate-Friendly Garden

As autumn approaches and the garden closes for the season, it's the perfect time to think about what to plant in spring - and how to make your garden better for biodiversity and climate.

Professor of forest and landscape ecology Per Gundersen explains what a climate garden is and offers practical advice on how to get started. Drawing on new research and practical examples, he shows how your garden can store more carbon, promote biodiversity, and handle drought better. He walks through how to design your garden based on different ecosystems - meadow, forest, pond, and lawn - and how garden waste can be reused as forest floor or compost heaps that eventually become fertile soil, rather than being hauled away.

Along the way, questions are raised such as: How do you balance climate considerations with aesthetics and usability? And what does it take to change the way we think about garden maintenance - from neat and decorative to wild and valuable?
