Paulus Schäfer (NL) Trio - Django/Gypsy Jazz/Sinti
Paulus Schäfer is a Dutch guitarist with roots in the Sinti music tradition, where he learned to play as a child from Waso Grünholz, a legend in Sinti music. Today he is a sought-after name on the international scene and has performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, Royal Opera House in Mumbai, Bimhuis and Jazz Dock in Prague, as well as festivals including Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Amersfoort World Jazz Festival, Jazz in Duketown, Daejon International Guitar Festival and Breda Jazz. On 30 May 2013 he received an award from the international guitar festival "The World of Guitar" for his "special contribution to the contemporary development of gypsy jazz".
Schäfer performs in many constellations. Since 2014 he has regularly appeared as a duo with harmonica player Dominique Paats - most recently on a tour of Dutch theatres under the name "Sous le Ciel de Paris" in 2023. His album "Letter to Vincent Van Gogh" contains his own compositions recorded with, among others, Tcha Limberger and pianist Peter Beets, and in 2024 he toured over 20 Dutch theatres with the group The Five Great Guitars. He has also performed with musicians such as Stochelo Rosenberg, Bireli Lagrene, Jan Akkerman, Antoine Boyer, Martin Taylor and Fapy Lafertin.
For tonight's concert at Bartof Café, he brings vocalist and guitarist Walter Clerici and double bassist Henrik Mathiassen. After the concert there will be a gypsy jazz jam session.
