Autumn Holiday at Laugø Smedje

The historic Laugø Smedje smithy in Laugø has remained virtually unchanged for a hundred years. During the autumn holiday, real blacksmiths arrive, light the forge, and demonstrate how horseshoes are shaped - and if you're keen, you can try your hand at swinging the heavy hammer yourself. There's also time for a chat about the old craft and the smithy's history, including the mysterious 'væltepeter'.

At the site you can buy small lucky horseshoes. According to folklore, iron's magical power kept ghosts, trolls, witches, and ill-intentioned people at bay. A horseshoe can be hung with the curve downward so luck doesn't run out, or upward as a 'gateway to luck'.
