Church Ships - History, Tradition and Background
Thu, 3 Dec 2026 · 19:00 — 21:00
Hedensted Folkebibliotek, Hedensted
Steen Zoffmann gives a lecture on church ships - a cultural heritage that many have seen hanging from church ceilings, but few know the story behind. The tradition has roots in the Mediterranean region and the Middle Ages and came to Denmark after the Reformation. Today, church ships are found in about half of the country's churches.
The lecture covers seafarers who hung models of their ships in hopes of returning home safely, and votive offerings - gifts promised to God in exchange for survival, hope or healing.
Tickets are purchased through Folkeuniversitetet Horsens-Hedensted.
