Daniel Rye
Tonight's guest is Daniel Rye, who shares his story of 398 days held hostage by ISIS. He describes his initial isolation and severe torture, his escape attempt, and how he used his background as an elite gymnast to gradually rebuild himself physically. After a month, he was placed with other Western hostages - including Pierre Torres and James Foley. Daniel and Pierre were negotiated free, while James Foley remained in captivity and later became a symbol of ISIS brutality.
On June 20, 2014, Daniel stepped into freedom after 13 months as a hostage - but the day meant to mark a new life became the start of a long struggle to find his way back to normalcy. Danish journalist and author Puk Damsgaard published the novel "Do You See the Moon, Daniel" in 2015, about Daniel's captivity, the efforts to secure his release, and everything in between. The book was adapted into a film of the same name in 2019.
The event is for young people aged 15-35. Admission is free - book only one ticket to avoid waste. The evening's lecture can be interpreted into English.
