XenophoniX AvantJazz Festival describes itself as a maximalist and loud free space for what doesn't fit elsewhere. The festival is curated by composer, director, voice and performance artist Marcela Lucatelli and spans two days at KU.BE with concerts, films, performances and talks that challenge conventional listening habits with an aesthetic that is anything but predictable. The festival is free and community-oriented, bringing together diverse artistic practices, perspectives and communities across cultural backgrounds.
On Saturday, October 17, the film "The Circular Universe" about Brazilian artist Jocy de Oliveira screens at 15:00, followed by a conversation with director Dácio Pinheiro. At 17:00, the short film collection "Poetics of Gesture" explores body, performance and the moment of creation. At 19:30, the sound work "Listening with Cracolândia" by Lílian Campesato and Valéria Bonafé is performed, based on the sound archive from "De-inhabiting Listening: Listening in Dispute in Cracolândia". At 20:00, Brazilian sound artists Pitter Rocha and Gabriel Dargains perform under the title "Via Prisma" with experimental electronics and prepared piano. The day closes at 21:00 when vocalist Marcela Lucatelli and saxophonist Lotte Anker meet for the first time in a duo format between improvisation and experimental jazz.
Sunday, October 18 begins at 14:00 with screenings of "Microfonias" (47 min.), "Tuning in to the Territory" and "Sweet Craco", followed by a conversation with artists Lílian Campesato and Valéria Bonafé.
