Secrets of the German Bunkers on the West Coast: Thursday 19 November 2026, 16:30–18:00, Varde Bibliotek, Varde. Admission is free.

When Denmark was liberated in May 1945, everyday life had to be rebuilt after five years of occupation. It took time to restore the cityscape to normal - especially along the Jutland west coast, where the Germans had built massive defensive installations during the occupation to guard against an attack from the west. These installations were part of the Atlantic Wall, the defensive line that stretched from the Spanish-French border in the south to the North Cape in the north.

The lecture examines why the Atlantic Wall's bunkers were so difficult to deal with after liberation, and how Danes' views of these massive concrete structures have changed since then.

The speaker is Chrestina Dahl, Ph.D. and museum inspector at the Bunker Museum - Vendsyssel Historical Museum.

The event takes place in Salonen. Coffee or tea is served at many of the library's events - please bring your own cup for environmental reasons.
