Thematic Day: The Ways and Byways of Love

Rigmor Kappel Schmidt - translator of Spanish and Russian works and author of several books - leads this theme day exploring the history of love from the Middle Ages to the present day.

The journey moves through medieval arranged marriages and the new view of women in chivalric literature shaped by Marie of Champagne and Chrétien de Troyes. From there we progress to the Renaissance rebellion against forced unions in Cervantes, the Don Juan figure's journey from Mozart to Kierkegaard, the great novels of Romanticism and the ironic distance Flaubert and Dostoevsky brought to melodrama. The day concludes with García Márquez's late love and film history's enduring tension between everyday love and wild obsession.
