The Great Southern Jutland Coffee Table

A traditional Southern Jutland coffee table is rare today, found only south of the Kongeå river. Den Gamle Kro in Gråsten serves up 29 varieties of homemade cakes, along with coffee and fresh bread. Some cakes are permanent fixtures, while others rotate seasonally.

Many visitors from north of the Kongeå will be puzzled by the names. There is svesketorte (prune cake), pomle (buns), striftorte (layer cake), brø'torte (rye bread layer cake), riskach (rice cake), medaljer and goj raj (good advice). Add to that pla'kach (sheet-pan cake), kiks'kach (biscuit cake) and stopkach, a hearty cake meant to satisfy before moving on to the finer delicacies like the medaljer.
