The Second Sex - A Comic Lecture with Maya Elisabeth

Drawing on her own comic series HUL, Maya Elisabeth explores a recent trend where female and non-binary cartoonists make the vulva visible - using humor to challenge taboos and preconceptions.

The lecture takes the audience through comics, myths, cultural history, and popular culture. Along the way we encounter Marjane Satrapi, Liv Strömquist, and Sheela-na-gigs, and examine the role visibility can play in representation, self-worth, research, and health.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions, and you can take home comic sheets and stickers. The stickers are intended as a friendly greeting to the many phallic symbols in the cityscape - so they don't have to be quite so lonely.
