Film Screening: The Librarians

The American documentary "The Librarians" tells the story of how librarians in the USA have become frontline figures in the fight for democracy and freedom of speech - at a time when the right to read freely has become a political battleground.

In 2021, the so-called Krause list in Texas - containing 850 titles about race and LGBTQIA+ issues - triggered a wave of book bans that has since spread across the country. The film follows librarians who refuse to back down, and who, despite harassment, threats, and legislation targeting their work, hold firm to the principle of free access to knowledge.

Along the way, it uncovers the forces behind the censorship movement and shows that the dispute over books is ultimately about something far larger: control of ideas - and thus control of society itself.
