Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen — Musikbiblioteket, Odense

Carl Nielsen and Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen had a turbulent marriage, but they held deep artistic respect for each other. She was a sculptor; he was a composer. The concert "Carl Nielsen AND Carl-Nielsen" places their artistic collaboration at its centre.

Composer Mogens Christensen has taken 12 of Carl Nielsen's piano pieces and recomposed them based on concrete sculptures by Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen. Poet Jesper Lützhøft has written texts that let the couple conduct a conversation about their art. Photographer Suste Bonnén and video artist Jacob Nielsen handle the visual side, drawing on details from Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen's works. Pianist Kristine Thorup performs both Carl Nielsen's original pieces and Mogens Christensen's recompositions - holding it all together.

As an extra element, Kristine Thorup has included relatively unknown piano pieces by Carl Nielsen, including a bridal waltz he allegedly composed at age 13.

Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen's art is visible in many public spaces: the equestrian statue at Christiansborg, the Little Mermaid at the Royal Library, the doors of Ribe Cathedral, and Queen Dagmar on the castle bank nearby. She often used her husband directly in her work - he literally modelled for many sculptures, either as the main figure or as a secondary character in reliefs. The concert was created in collaboration with AOF.
