Das Lied von der Erde is a symphonic song cycle by Gustav Mahler, composed in 1908-09 for two soloists and large orchestra. The texts are German adaptations of ancient Chinese Tang poetry, circling around themes of transience and farewell. Mahler never heard it performed - the premiere took place posthumously in 1911, conducted by Bruno Walter. The final movement, Der Abschied, is celebrated for its hushed, dissolving close.
