The Danish String Quartet is a Danish chamber ensemble formed in Copenhagen in the early 2000s, made up of violinists Frederik Øland and Rune Tonsgaard Sørensen, violist Asbjørn Nørgaard and Norwegian-born cellist Fredrik Schøyen Sjölin. Celebrated for moving fluidly between core classical repertoire and their own arrangements of Nordic folk music, the group has won the Carl Nielsen Prize and, in 2025, became the first ensemble ever to receive the Léonie Sonning Music Prize. They are Grammy-nominated and released the folk-inspired album "Keel Road" in 2024, marking ten years of exploring Scandinavian folk traditions.
In June 2025, the quartet became the first ensemble to receive the prestigious Léonie Sonning Music Prize, presented by the King of Denmark at a ceremony in Copenhagen.
In March 2026, the quartet performed together with DR Girls' Choir at DR Concert Hall ahead of a major joint tour to the USA.
In April 2026, the quartet went on a USA tour coast to coast with Denmark's Girls' Choir, featuring the American premiere of a new work by David Lang.
At the end of November 2026, the quartet performs in Klampenborg with a concert called 'Gin & Folk Music'.
The album 'Keel Road' was released in August 2024 on ECM and marked ten years of work with Nordic folk music.
