Mazaher EG
Egyptian ensemble Mazaher plays ritualistic music rooted in Cairo's musical traditions.
Mazaher is an Egyptian ensemble from Cairo that keeps alive zar, a centuries-old trance healing ritual rooted in Sudan, Ethiopia and Egypt. Founded in 1999 around some of the last active zar practitioners - lead singer Umm Sameh, Umm Hassan and Nour El Sabah - the group performs the ritual's hypnotic polyrhythms on tamboura, drums and tambourines, led by call-and-response singing. Since their only album, Zar (2020), Mazaher has carried the fading tradition from their weekly home at Cairo's Makan cultural centre to stages across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East.
In June 2026, Mazaher performed in Marseille as part of the cultural program ʿUbūr together with Moroccan gnawa musicians, and the concert was the last for tamboura player Imam.
The ensemble performs at the jazz club Fasching in Stockholm on 1 November 2026.
On 5 November 2026, Mazaher returns to the venue ALICE in Copenhagen, where the group has also performed before.
