Østre Gasværk Teater occupies a former gasometer from 1883 in Copenhagen's Østerbro district, a building designed by Martin Nyrop, who later created Copenhagen City Hall. The actor Morten Grunwald discovered the derelict structure in 1976 and set about turning it into a theatre; it has operated as an independent venue since 1989, seating around 800. Today it specialises in large-scale musicals and music theatre, and since 2023 its proprietary THEATREMAX® system - backed by the A.P. Møller Foundation - integrates immersive sound, light and projection into every production.
The original musical OLIVIA - and the shadow dancers' secret premieres on 18 September 2026 with music by Rasmus Seebach, Ankerstjerne and Andreas Sommer and script by Adam Price.
The theatre announced the Scandinavian premiere of the Broadway hit HADESTOWN on 17 September 2027 with Søren Torpegaard Lund in the lead role as Orpheus - the world's first reinterpretation of the production.
The theatre concert DE VILDE KANINER - Theatre Concert Gnags premiered on 19 September 2025 and continued from January 2026.
THEATREMAX® was launched at the premiere of HAIR in February 2023 with support from A.P. Møller Foundation, Augustinus Foundation and Aage and Johanne Louis-Hansen Foundation.
