German Film Club - Spur der Steine
A banned East German masterpiece about construction workers caught between ambition and state control - Frank Beyer's 1966 film finally screened publicly after decades of censorship.
Spur der Steine (Trace of Stones) is a 1966 East German feature film directed by Frank Beyer for DEFA, starring Manfred Krug as the defiant construction foreman Hannes Balla. The film portrays power struggles and personal conflicts on a GDR building site, drawing on Erik Neutsch's novel of the same name. The Socialist Unity Party banned it within days of its premiere for alleged anti-socialist tendencies, and it remained unseen for 23 years until its re-release in November 1989. It is now regarded as one of the most significant works of East German cinema.
DEFA-Stiftung marked the film's 60th anniversary with a special screening at Kino International in Berlin on June 30, 2026, with guests from the original production.
HfG Karlsruhe showed the film in November 2025 as part of their 'Kino im Blauen Salon' program.
Yorck Kinos Berlin included the film in the program for '80 Jahre DEFA'.
