Sønderborg Naturcenter is based at Frydendal, a farmstead from 1794 set within the 134-hectare Kær Vestermark nature area just north of Sønderborg. The buildings, formerly part of the Army Sergeant School's training grounds, were renovated using recycled materials and opened as a nature centre in May 2022. The municipality's nature guides run tours on biodiversity, wild food and pond life from here, and there is an equipment lending bank for schools and private visitors. The surrounding area has walking and cycling trails, shelters, bird hides and the covered barbecue hut known as Støvlen.
