This year marks 1200 years since the monk Ansgar began his work converting the Danes to Christianity. But who was he really - and did he even reach the Danish realm in 826?
Ansgar's place in Danish history has been significant: in 1826, the 1000th anniversary of the Danish church was celebrated, and in 1926 he stood again as the central figure in the story of Christianity's arrival. Historian Kasper H. Andersen explores Christianity's early roots in Denmark and examines Ansgar both as a historical figure and as a character in later interpretations - with an eye for the dramatic details along the way.
