SVEND: Conversation: Hercules Falls

What happens to a soldier when the war is over, but not forgotten?

That question is at the heart of the film 'Hercules Falls' (2025), a Danish drama about Youssef, who returns home from multiple deployments and struggles to find his place in family life and everyday routines. Director Christian Bonke discusses the making of the film, which was shot on Strynø in the South Funen Archipelago and at a real nature retreat for veterans - and features several Danish veterans on screen.

Museum director Sarah Smed puts the story in perspective by examining how society previously received returning soldiers - including through stays at care homes. Together, Bonke and Smed open up a broader discussion about care, stigma, and identity when the uniform is hung up. The conversation is led by literature facilitator Nanna Ask from Svendborg Library.
