Library Club Café Evening - When Books Become Forbidden: An Evening on Freedom of Expression

The evening opens with an expert lecture on how those in power throughout history - deliberately or not - have used art, literature and culture to shape thinking and values. The lecture draws on historical and current examples of banned books and raises the question: Why are some stories and artworks perceived as dangerous?

Following this, a documentary about American librarians on the front lines of a growing culture war over freedom of expression, democracy and free access to knowledge will be screened. The starting point is Texas in 2021, when the so-called Krause list of 850 books on race and LGBTQIA+ topics triggered a wave of book bans that has since spread across much of the USA. We follow librarians who refuse to remove the books from the shelves - despite harassment, threats and political pressure.

In connection with the event, the library exhibits books that have been banned at various points in history - or still are today - around the world.

Registration is required, as coffee, tea and refreshments will be served during the break. Tickets are non-refundable after purchase unless the organizer cancels.
