Between 1860 and the outbreak of World War I, one in ten Danes emigrated - most heading to America. This lecture examines what they left behind, what they hoped to find, and how life unfolded after arriving in New York. Danish emigration also illuminates the major transformations in Danish society at that time.

The lecturer is Christian Friis (b. 1972), a cand.mag. in the history of ideas from Aarhus University. He teaches at Askov Folk High School, chairs Grundtvigsk Forum Askov, and sits on the board of Vejen Folk University.

Kalundborg Bibliotek og Borgerservice is the main library of Kalundborg municipality, situated on Klostertorvet 2, with separate adult and children's sections as well as citizen services. The reading room offers newspapers and magazines, while the basement holds non-fiction, CDs, DVDs, sheet music and old local newspapers. A makerspace with 3D printers and rotating art exhibitions round out the facilities; the library is one of eight branches in the municipal network.

About: Christian Friis

Historian and folk high school teacher Christian Friis has delivered hundreds of lectures the length and breadth of Denmark, ranging from Danish social history and emigration to fine art and opera. Based in Askov, he also leads cultural tours to Europe and Asia.
