Since little Eyolf fell from a table as an infant and became disabled, shame and guilt have poisoned the marriage between his parents, Rita and Alfred. Alfred has buried himself in work on his philosophical treatise 'The Human Responsibility' and has neglected both his son and his wife. Rita longs for her husband and to feel desired again.

When Alfred returns from a mountain hike with a revelation - he will no longer write, but dedicate his life to Eyolf - it awakens Rita's jealousy. Where the book once stood between them, she now fears it will be their son. That jealousy awakens the darkest thoughts a mother can have about her child. And when the mysterious Rat Maiden visits the family, they are struck by an overwhelming tragedy.

Little Eyolf from 1894 is one of Ibsen's late works, where he lays bare desire, hatred, jealousy, guilt and responsibility in a drama that is both timeless and modern - not least in the question of how much children fill the family against self-realization and career.

Mette Døssing plays Rita and Christian Hetland plays Alfred. Mette Klakstein appears as Alfred's sister Asta, Thorbjørn Hedegaard as her suitor Borghejm, and Bodil Lassen plays the unsettling Rat Maiden. The play is adapted and directed by Maria Kjærgaard-Sunesen, who recently directed Alice in Wonderland at Aarhus Teater, while Palle Steen Christensen creates the set design.
