Danish West Indies: Past and Present

A lecture on Denmark's colonial period and role as a slave nation - from 1665, when the Danish flag was planted on Saint Thomas, to 1917, when the sale of the islands to the USA brought the Danish state treasury 25 million dollars.

The lecture covers Danish forts on the African coast, the transatlantic slave trade, and the three Caribbean islands of Saint Thomas, Saint Croix, and Saint John. Speaker Kim Greiner discusses the islands' indigenous population, Christopher Columbus' arrival, pirates, sugar plantations, slave rebellions, Peter von Scholten, and the eventual cession to the USA. The history is presented accessibly so everyone can follow along.

Kim Greiner also shares from his own travels around the islands. He is trained as a forest and landscape engineer but has worked as a globetrotter, author, and lecturer since 2015. He is a member of The Travelers' Club and has traveled to 83 countries.
