Hunting with the Ocean's Giants

Whales are the planet's largest animals, yet for a long time we knew almost nothing about what they did in the open sea. Drones and suction-cup-mounted measuring equipment have changed that - researchers can now follow the animals directly as they hunt in the depths.

The lecture explores whale biology and their role as apex predators in ocean ecosystems. Along the way we see harbour porpoises hunting in Danish waters, and deep-sea cameras attempt to map how sperm whales find food more than 1,000 metres down. We also hear about the life of Greenland whales in Disko Bay - including the remarkable fact that a humpback whale mother can give birth and nurse a calf for half a year without eating.

The lecture concludes with the question of sustainable coexistence with these animals in the future.
