Workshop in Indigo Dyeing with Japanese Shibori Techniques — Copenhagen

On September 25, 15:00-20:00, Ida Christoffersen teaches indigo dyeing and Japanese shibori techniques. Ida recently returned from Japan, where she deepened her knowledge of shibori on the Izu Peninsula and in Kawasaki. She designs and teaches Japanese textile traditions through her upcycling universe YUME.ITO - follow her on Instagram under the same name for designs, workshops, and Japanese sauna events.

The workshop is a collaboration between YUME.ITO and Edderbrodermig in Helsingør, both sharing a fascination with Japanese textile craftsmanship. We dye with pre-reduced indigo (not fermented vat, as there is no time to start one).

During the day you will learn to weigh, mix, and pH-test your own indigo vat, and you will be introduced to four shibori techniques: stitched, wrapped, folded, and gathered around a rod. You will make at least four dye applications on your own fabric or textiles, and after the workshop you can take your indigo vat bucket home for further dyeing. You will also receive YUME.ITO's booklet with recipes and technique descriptions, and there is an opportunity to buy Japanese indigo and shibori tools. Japanese tea and miso and milk chocolate cookies are served.

Bring two pieces of white cotton or linen fabric (preferably rectangular) - optionally also 2-3 white t-shirts, shirts or similar in cotton, linen or silk. Scissors, relatively strong thread or thin yarn with a suitable needle, and rubber gloves in your size. A small packed lunch with fruit, nuts or similar if you need more than tea and cookies. Dress according to the weather - we are outdoors - and wear clothes and shoes that may get stained.

Everyone over 10 years old is welcome, and no prior knowledge is required. Questions? Write to kontakt@yumeito.dk
