The Middle East has been marked by wars, great-power rivalry, and deep historical tensions for decades. But what causes conflicts to flare up again and again in this region?

Historian, journalist, and author Adam Holm examines the region's long history and the events that continue to shape it today. Drawing on current conflicts - from the war in Gaza following the October 7 attack to tensions between Iran, Israel, and the great powers - he paints a picture of the forces driving developments.

The lecture also touches on Syria's history and future after decades of dictatorship. In his book "One Tyrant Less", Adam Holm describes the brutal Assad regime and the events that led to its fall after more than half a century in power.
