Listening Club Jazz: Latin American Threads

This listening club evening explores the role of Latin American dance music in jazz's development - an influence that has left deep marks over decades.

Host Jørn Wiese traces a line from Dizzy Gillespie's encounter with Cuban music in the 1940s, through bossa nova's breakthrough with Stan Getz in the 1960s, and on to salsa's fusion experiments in the 1970s. Along the way, musicians such as Cal Tjader, John Scofield, Bill Frisell, and Chick Corea are presented - the latter inspired by the Cuban group Irakere - as well as Jerry González, Eddie Palmieri, Tito Puente, Arturo O'Farrill, Chucho Valdés, and Michel Camilo. Even Niels Henning Ørsted Pedersen recorded with Brazilian singer Astrud Gilberto. The rhythms that tie it all together - salsa, mambo, cha-cha-cha, samba, bossa nova, and tango - are supported by instruments such as congas, bongos, timbales, maracas, and claves.

The listening club meets almost always on the first Wednesday of the month at Scenen in Roskilde Library. No musical background is required - it's about listening and discussing the music afterwards. The venue is accessible for wheelchair users, walkers, and prams, and people with hearing impairments can bring their own assistive devices.
