The association - originally called Slægtshistorisk Forening Aalborg - held its first meeting on 16 March 1976 in the canteen at Sønderbro School and is today one of Denmark's oldest genealogy societies with 380 members. For a modest annual membership fee, members can attend historical lectures, city walks, excursions to the National Archives in Viborg and local history archives in North Jutland, and workshops at the City Archive on Thursday afternoons, where experienced researchers also help new members - including deciphering Gothic script in historical sources.
