Jesper Wung-Sung: Sandøs rose - The Liar Revisited · Kokkedal, Kokkedal

Jesper Wung-Sung on Sandøs rose: Thursday 12 November 2026, 19:00–20:30, Kokkedal, Kokkedal. Tickets cost 60–75 kr.

"Every generation must conquer the island. It is spirit to set the plough in the earth and plough, to set pen to paper to conquer it through knowledge."

Martin A. Hansen's 'The Liar' was published in 1950 and has since established itself as one of the great classics of Danish literature. 76 years later, Jesper Wung-Sung has turned the novel on its head in 'Sandøs rose': the same four days in March on the small island of Sandø, but now seen through the eyes of Annemaris - she who in the original is the object of the deacon Johannes Vig's toxic seduction. In Wung-Sung's novel, she finds her voice and is allowed to show the vitality and strength she possesses.

Jesper Wung-Sung is in conversation with literature mediator Asger Malmmose Berndsen about what it means to engage in dialogue with such a weighty novel, how to tell the counter-story to what has already been told, and what relevance 'The Liar' has today.

As a prelude and postlude to the event, the Classics Club reads Hansen's 'The Liar' on 3/11 and Wung-Sung's 'Sandøs rose' on 1/12.
