Homemade Sandwiches & Homemade Beer: Grundtvig — Aabenraa Bibliotek, Aabenraa

An evening exploring N.F.S. Grundtvig's literary works and life - both the myths and realities surrounding one of Danish cultural history's most discussed figures.

Most people know Grundtvig as a hymn writer, church reformer, and social critic. Today he is linked to almost everything with "folk" at the front - but does that match what he actually meant for the Danish folk church, free schools, folk high schools, free congregations, and democracy?

Grundtvig was a complicated man. In his own time he moved from a rational thinker to an emotionally-driven revival preacher who was deeply unpopular for his harsh criticism - and ended up as a kind of national hero. He lived alternately in poverty and wealth, had the right connections, and an almost cult-like movement around him. He did not compromise, but also had his dark sides. Moreover, he was extraordinarily productive: it is estimated that he left behind around 85,000 printed pages of letters, songs, books, and poems.

The event requires a minimum of 3 registrations to take place. Registration deadline is 19/10, and ticket sales open on 4 August at 10:00.
