Join the Ceremony as Svaneke's Old Roadside Poplar Becomes an Eternity Tree · Svaneke
Description was written before the event

Svaneke's historic roadside poplar receives two distinctions on the same day: a European TreeTag and an official designation as an Eternity Tree. Morten Bach Jørgensen, landscape manager at Bornholm Regional Municipality, will discuss the TreeTag and the ecosystem services the tree provides as part of the European TreeTag Campaign 2026, which highlights the importance of large and ancient trees for the environment, climate, and people across Europe.

The designation is marked by a ceremony where Ann Rubæk, chair of the Culture and Local Community Committee, receives the Eternity Tree diploma from Jette Harild of DN Bornholm. Harild will also speak about the importance of preserving old trees on Bornholm.

The roadside poplar is already an ancient giant with a circumference of around 430 cm. With its designation as an Eternity Tree, the hope is that it will be allowed to stand and continue developing as a habitat for animals, plants, and fungi - and as part of Bornholm's natural and cultural heritage.

Everyone is welcome. Read more about Eternity Trees on DN Bornholm's website.
