Genealogy - An Introduction with Hands-On Practice

Genealogy - Introduction with Hands-On Practice: Wednesday 25 November 2026, 10:00–13:00, Roskilde Bibliotek, Roskilde. Admission is free.

Do you have a fascinating family history waiting to be discovered?

Birte Tofte-Hansen offers a practical introduction to genealogy for absolute beginners, allowing you to start your own research at your own pace. During the morning session, you will be introduced to the Danish National Archives (Rigsarkivet) and Arkivalieronline, church records, census data, death registers, and online maps and photographs. You will also see a free genealogy software program that you can use after the introduction ends.

The teaching is based on a proven, methodical approach to genealogy, and you will have the opportunity to practice in the digital archives with guidance at hand.

You are expected to have basic experience with a mouse, keyboard, and internet, and to have access to a webmail account at the library. If you were born before 1950, bring your own birth certificate. If you were born after 1950, bring a copy of your father's birth certificate instead.

Birte Tofte-Hansen holds a B.A. in Danish and communication and is an experienced genealogist herself. She has extensive teaching experience, specialized knowledge of Gothic script reading, and broad knowledge of both her own family history and general history and social conditions.

Questions about the course can be directed to librarian Hanne Bjørn at hannebjorn@roskilde.dk. If you are unable to attend, please cancel as early as possible so others can take your place.

The course is held in the Netværkstedet room at Roskilde Library. Read more about access conditions at the library.
