Workshop in Sign Language - Learn the Art of Communicating with Hand Signs

Sign Language Workshop - Learn Danish Signs: Monday 2 November 2026, 19:00–20:00, Holte Bibliotek, Holte. Admission is free.

"Local Storytellers" is the library's format where residents of Rudersdal share their special knowledge with others. This evening, Cathrine Mejdahl, a trained cultural educator fluent in Danish sign language, leads the workshop. The session is open to all - no prior registration or experience needed.

During the one-hour workshop, you will learn facts about sign language and deafness (did you know, for example, that sign language is not international, and that not all deaf people use sign language?), explore the evening's theme with words related to food, weather, nature and fingerspelling, practice signs, facial expressions and body language yourself, and review what you've learned. You'll gain both background knowledge about Danish sign language and practical words and signs you can use at a fingerspelling level - and become generally better at communicating with facial expressions, body and hands. Bring friends, children and parents if you like. Coffee, cake, fruit, tea, water and juice will be served.

This evening serves as a casual introduction to sign language. Four additional workshops with Cathrine will follow for those who wish to continue: Monday 9/11, 16/11, 23/11 and 30/11, 7-8 p.m., also at Holte Library.

About the instructor: Cathrine Mejdahl was born deaf and grew up with Danish sign language. She is a trained cultural educator with anthropology as a minor subject and has worked for several years with fundraising and communication. Today she is an independent accessibility consultant advising companies and cultural institutions on how accessibility can strengthen inclusive initiatives. She has two hearing children who attend Rude Skov School in Birkerød.
