Voices in Wax // Concert Lecture on Evald Tang Kristensen
Vejle Bibliotek - Spinderiet, Vejle · Free
Voices in Wax - Concert Lecture on Evald Tang Kristensen: Tuesday 24 November 2026, 19:00–21:00, Vejle Bibliotek - Spinderiet, Vejle. Admission is free.
Evald Tang Kristensen (1843-1929) spent his life collecting songs, legends and stories from working people on the Jutland heath. He was particularly connected to the Vejle region, and his work preserved an important part of the area's cultural history. A room in ENGEN is named after him.
This is marked with a concert lecture by the duo Stemmer i voks. Ulla Bendixen and Martin Ottosen blend live music with historical sound recordings and stories from the heath. The foundation is folk songs recorded over 100 years ago on wax cylinders with a phonograph. The duo gives these old voices new resonance through singing, treadle organ, mandolin and piano, while telling the story of Evald Tang Kristensen's tireless work and the people whose songs and stories he saved from being lost.
The audience can see a working phonograph and participate in knitting communal tapestries that grow with each concert. The tapestries are inspired by the old weaving rooms of the heath.
About Stemmer i voks: Ulla Bendixen and Martin Ottosen are both central members of the award-winning orchestra Sorten Muld. For 30 years they have worked to renew Nordic folk music. In 2025 they released the album Stemmer i voks, which received five stars in GAFFA.
The concert lecture is part of the opening programme for ENGEN Cultural Centre and Library and takes place in the Inger Christensen Hall. Entry is free, but tickets must be booked in advance.
