Voices in Wax
Ulla Bendixen and Martin Ottosen from Sorten Muld revive century-old recordings from Jutland wax cylinders with pump organ, mandolin, and nyckelharpa.
Ulla Bendixen is the lead vocalist and co-founder of the Danish folktronica ensemble Sorten Muld, which she formed in 1995 alongside Martin Ottosen and Henrik Munch. Her ethereal voice carries centuries-old Danish folk ballads into an electronic soundscape - an approach that earned the band two Danish Grammys for the album Mark II. Since a 2019 revival, Sorten Muld has been performing and recording again, and Bendixen also fronts the side project Stemmer i Voks, singing alongside early 1900s phonograph recordings from the Jutland heath.
Gaffa reviewed Stemmer i Voks' debut album in June 2025 and described the duo as 'deeply original'.
Stemmer i Voks performed at Roots&Hybrid 2025 and SPOT Festival in Aarhus in May 2025.
The Stemmer i Voks project toured Denmark in early 2025 with concert lectures about phonograph recordings from the Jutland heath.
Sorten Muld performed at Amager Bio in Copenhagen on August 16, 2024.
Sorten Muld released the comeback album Mark IV - Lånt tid on May 13, 2021 with 12 new songs.
