Quantum physics describes the world of atoms and molecules - a realm where particles can seemingly exist in multiple places at once, and where measurements always yield random results. Since the early 20th century, physics has worked with these principles, and predictions have been confirmed with great precision in both physics and chemistry.
This lecture introduces quantum physics, existing technologies, and future technologies built on the quantum behavior of atomic particles. The focus is on quantum computers, which use atomic quantum states to perform calculations on many numbers simultaneously. Since the 1990s, large sums have been invested in the race to develop them - both in Denmark and internationally - and the lecture explains how far we have come and what quantum computers will be able to do when fully functional.
