When Books Are Banned // Film Screening and Talk

The documentary 'The Librarians' portrays American librarians caught in the struggle over book bans, censorship, and freedom of speech. Based on the so-called Krause List - 850 titles that have been banned - the film shows how a wave of book bans spread from Texas across much of the USA, and how librarians continue to fight for free access to knowledge despite harassment, threats, and political pressure.

Before the screening, librarian and film participant Becky Calzada joins live online from Texas. She has worked with school libraries, reading, and information literacy in Texas for nearly 40 years and is a co-founder of the grassroots movement #FReadomFighters, which advocates for intellectual freedom and against censorship and book bans in the USA.

The event is part of Danish PEN's nationwide campaign #BannedBooks in week 11, which focuses on censorship, book bans, democracy, and the right to free access to literature and information.
