Becky Calzada is a school library coordinator from Leander, Texas, and a co-founder of the grassroots advocacy group #FReadomFighters, launched in October 2021 to defend intellectual freedom and push back against book bans across the United States. She served as president of the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) in 2024-25, the first Latina to hold that office. In 2025 she appeared in the documentary 'The Librarians', directed by Kim A. Snyder, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received a wide theatrical release.
Calzada is running for the presidency of the American Library Association for the period 2027-28.
As outgoing AASL president, Calzada presented Presidential Commendations to the film crew behind 'The Librarians' and to Book Riot's Kelly Jensen for their efforts in intellectual freedom.
Calzada walked the red carpet at the world premiere of the documentary 'The Librarians' at the Sundance Film Festival on January 24, 2025.
'The Librarians' won the jury prize for best documentary at both the Sarasota Film Festival and the Dallas International Film Festival.
Calzada received the Eleanor Roosevelt Literary Freedom Award 2025 for her long-standing efforts in intellectual freedom.
