Linguistic Diversity - European Day of Languages

The European Day of Languages was established by the Council of Europe in 2001 to promote linguistic diversity and celebrate Europe's many languages. EUROPE DIRECT South Denmark marks the occasion in the Hall at Varde Library with two presentations.

4:00-5:00 PM: Language, Culture and AI - Behind the Scenes in the EU

The EU is built on a principle of multilingualism, where all 24 official languages have equal status. But how does everyday life, democracy and communication work when so many languages and cultures meet? And what can artificial intelligence actually contribute - and where do machines hit a wall against human intuition and cultural nuance? What happens, for example, to Jutlandic understatement when it goes through machine translation?

The speaker is Claus Thornby Larsen, cand.ling.merc., who has worked as a translator and with language technology at the EU Commission in Luxembourg for over 20 years. He is currently employed at the EU Commission's Representation in Copenhagen.

5:10-6:40 PM: Jutlandic

Lecturer in Nordic languages and literature Inger Schoonderbeek Hansen provides an introduction to the history and characteristics of the Jutlandic dialect. Jutlandic is not just one thing - there is northern Jutlandic, western Jutlandic, crown Jutlandic and southern Jutlandic, and the dialects stretch from Skagen in the north to Padborg in the south, even a bit across the border. And then there is rural Jutlandic, which even Jutlanders barely understand.

Inger Schoonderbeek Hansen is a lecturer at the Peter Skautrup Centre for Jutlandic Dialect Research and has written the essay 'Jysg'.
