The musical Chess was created in the mid-1980s by ABBA stars Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus (music) and Tim Rice (lyrics), the latter known for Evita and Jesus Christ Superstar. The story revolves around the rivalry between two chess players caught in a complex love story full of intrigue. The musical was a hit on both London's West End and New York's Broadway.

Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival presents a concert version with the Sønderjylland Symphony Orchestra and Schleswig-Holstein Festival Choir under the direction of Nicolas Fink, who has conducted the choir for many years. Among the soloists is Sabrina Weckerlin, who has earned recognition on Hamburg's musical theatre stages - most recently as Elsa in Disney's Frozen. The programme includes "One Night in Bangkok" and the duet "I Know Him So Well".

About the venue: Koncertsalen Alsion

Koncertsalen Alsion in Sønderborg is the main concert hall for the whole of Southern Jutland, with seating for up to 988 guests. The programme ranges from classical music and opera to stand-up, comedy and lectures, with Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester as a regular resident ensemble. The hall is constructed as two concrete shells, one inside the other, keeping outside noise at bay and giving it acoustics that performers consistently praise. The 20-metre-wide stage can be adjusted hydraulically to depths of 6, 9 or 12 metres.

About: Sønderjyllands Symfoniorkester

One of Denmark's five regional orchestras, resident at Alsion in Sønderborg since 2007. Its 65 musicians cover all of Southern Jutland with around 150 concerts a year, and the orchestra maintains a long-standing cross-border partnership with the Schleswig-Holsteinisches Sinfonieorchester.
