Animals in Our Lives

Bioethicist Mickey Gjerris, lecturer at the University of Copenhagen and author of "The Book of Animals", gives a lecture on the relationship between humans and animals, and what we are truly obligated to do for them.

The starting point is the political momentum animals gained leading up to the 2026 parliamentary election: citizen proposals, street demonstrations, and the pig as a symbol of a broader debate. But what happens when the election campaign is over? In his book, Gjerris examines the paradox that many people know how farm animals live - chickens that grow too fast to bear their own weight, sows confined in steel crates - and yet act as if they don't know it. The lecture centres on one fundamental question: if animals have the right to a life, what does that obligate us to do?
