Behind the Headlines: How Do Danes Actually Integrate?

The public debate paints a bleak picture of integration in Denmark - but does it match reality? Christian Albrekt Larsen, professor at Aalborg University, examines Danish register data and representative surveys to answer concrete questions: How often do immigrants, descendants of immigrants, and Danes marry each other? How many children grow up with parents of different backgrounds? And to what extent do Danes with Muslim backgrounds have close friends outside their own group - and vice versa?

According to Larsen, the figures show that contact between population groups actually occurs with increasing frequency - in schools, workplaces, and social networks - and that Denmark today effectively functions as a multiethnic society. This does not mean integration is problem-free; the presentation particularly emphasizes the importance of "forced" meeting places, where people encounter each other without having chosen it themselves.
